Shepherd does comic mic checks, tells a short news gag about a 10-foot python found in an Innsbruck hotel closet, then launches the main piece: Thanksgiving in the Army in the rainy Ozarks.
He describes months of miserable bivouac—pup tents too low to stand in, trenches that don’t keep water out, moldy fatigues, powdered eggs like library paste, rubber toast, field-kitchen dishwater smell, mail call and Dear John letters, and a soldier who snaps, stands up in his tent, and runs off trailing the shelter half (later headed for a Section 8). Passes are scarce; the nearest town is tiny and overrun. A week before Thanksgiving, Sergeant Kowalski announces a lottery: one-third of the men get a five-day, 800-mile-restricted pass. Shepherd and tentmate Goldberg lose.
On Thanksgiving morning the cook still delivers a feast: fresh eggs any style, smoked bacon, country sausage, real milk, strawberry jam, and proper toast. They eat for hours, crawl back into the wet tents with leftovers, and decide they are glad they didn’t get the pass. Shepherd frames it as the kind of day that only becomes good in retrospect.
