Topic: Bergman Tapes - Lowell notes
Desc: I'll try to give you some more info on the CDs that you mentioned. On CD#2, the Perelman interview may have been undated, but Gene may have marked it 1958. Shep says it is 1958 on the tape but you know how he is on dates, although he probably got that current year back then correct! Track #2 is referenced as June 1957 because I mention that there are references to June 57 by Shep on this recording which I do not specify in my notes! The remainder of the segments on CD#2 I guessed are 1957 since they follow that June 1957 cut -(i.e. the one I assumed was June 1957!) The Al Collin's clip on CD#14 is identified as Circa 1957 because it was on the same cassette (indentified by Gene as cassette #4) as these 1957 items and probably was just after them based on my notes. BTW, the 1958 Perelman interview was on a different cassette (#12) than the assumed 1957 stuff. On CD#3, the first three tracks were from cassette #4 (the assummed 1957 cassette), therefore I called them circa 1957. They were at the end of the cassette based on the order I made recordings from the cassette. The remainder of stuff on CD#3 is from cassette #5. My notes on this have the notation "shows from November 25, 1958(?)" which must be a note by Gene. I guess I couldn't believe they were all from one date, so I called them all Circa 1958! On the other side of cassette #5 is the show marked December 14, 1958, which is Shep reading the funnies because of a newspaper strike. I assummed that the date was correct. I did not check to see if there was a newspaper strike at this time- this would be worthwhile to do since this is an oldie dated so precisely. The order of the cuts were changed around to fit the CDs on CDs #16,#17, and #18. Anything on these CDs which references Tape III is a cassette marked November 1957 by Gene. That's why I called Track #1 on CD#16 as 11-57. The order of clips following this on Tape III are #16 track 2 (Transfers), CD#18 track 1(FuManchu), #16 track 3 (Florida Travelog), #16 track 4 (Mystery Sound), #16 track 5 (Lifesaver). Then, starting side two of cassette Tape III continues with CD#16 track 6 (Giant Bicycle), CD#16 track #7 (Sorehead), CD#18 track 2 (Sucker List), CD#16 track #8 (Perelman), CD#16 track #9 (Plastic). One comment is worthwhile here. I called CD#16 track 8 (Perelman) a 1958 date, yet it is sandwhiched inbetween tracks 7 and 9 shown as circa 1957. Either the track #8 Perelman clip was identified to be part of that other longer 1958 Perelman segment or it was mistakenly maked as 1958 between those CD#16 track 7, and 9 shown as circa 1957. I think you can see I was just trying to make intelligent guesses at this point!!! On CD#17, track #1 is definitely 6-16-57, at least most of it. This 66 minute file is all from cassette I. I assumed side 2 of the cassette was also 6-16-57 since the quality of the recording and Shep's style seemed to match. I remember that I verified the date on this one by checking the baseball scores quoted in a newsbreak. On CD#17, and #18, I can't readily tell from my notes why I called everything on cassette tape II to be circa 1957. It may be because track #5 of CD#18 mentions Sputnik, which was October 1957, if I remember correctly. This long track (i.e. #5 on CD #18) was the last recording on that cassette tape II which is probably why I called everything before it circa 1957 since Sputnik was late in 1957! This is the best I can come up with.
