Jean Shepherd Appears April 13 In Kennedy Series

Jean Shepherd will present some of his wry and galvanic commentaries on "The Way Things Really Are in Our Time," covering such subjects as protests, commercialism, growing up and being in the Army, when he appears "in concert" for the John F. Kennedy Memorial Series in Cranford High School at 8:30 p.m. next Thursday. If Jean Shepherd's face is unfamiliar, his voice is not, for it has been heard by millions of fans over WOR since he began his career with that radio station in 1957. His program of commentary and wit, filled with bright insight into hypocrisies of our times, is very much like the man himself - completely unpredictable. There are few things he, will not discuss on the air, so one never knows what to expect. Although Mr. Shepherd's popularity is greatest among college age people he denies that the problems he describes are limited to only the younger generation. "Don't confuse cultism with young people," he says. "Today, you tend to think they're the only ones doing anything extraordinary. I think the older a person gets, the more desperate he gets and he'll try all kinds of crazy religions and schemes to rejuvenate himself. It's the middle-age groups who commit themselves, who make up the real establishment. The John F. Kennedy Memorial Series is sponsored by the Cranford Education Association and the Parent-Teacher Organizations of Cranford. Proceeds will help provide scholarships for local Students. Tickets will be available at the door next Thursday night, or advanced purchase may be arranged by contacting Rev. George White, president of the association, at Hillside Avenue Junior High School.
