Shepherd Gets A Soap Sponsor
Performer May Sell Product He Advertised Free - WOR Must First Find Him

Jean Shepherd the offbeat personality who was dropped by radio station WOR for presenting an unsponsored commercial in behalf of Sweetheart soap had a new job offer yesterday. It came from Sweetheart soap, which wants to sponsor him (paid time, that is) on WOR. As Mr. Shepherd would say, "Excelsior." A spokesman for WOR, said the soap company was interested in sponsoring Mr. Shepherd on a Sunday program that would start at 9:05 P.M. and run until 1 A.M. The Advertising agency of Scheideler, Beck & Werner, Inc. confirmed that it was interested in such a project. It said: "Sweetheart soap has offered to sponsor Jean Shepherd if WOR can arrange a suitable time." WOR said it had already had arranged for the time by cancelling several Sunday night programs, including some commercial broadcasts. But the station said it still had a problem: It can't locate Mr. Shepherd to tell him the good news. MANHUNT PRESSED WOR sait it had telephoned Mr. Shepherd's home in New Jersey, his agent and his publisher, but no one knew the whereabouts of Mr. S. The station asserted that beginning today it would run advertisements in local newspapers (paid space, that is) saying in effect" "Jean Shepherd, please come home. All is forgiven." Mr. Shepherd, a shy, professorial young man who built a following among self-confessed eggheads, was dropped twice by WOR within less than a week. After his 1 to 5:30 A.M. program was given notice of candellation, he got a last minute reprieve of one week. It was during the reprieve that he injected the unscheduled commercial for Sweetheart soap, just "to prove I could sell soap," This incensed the WOR management, which cut him off the air at 2:30 in the morning. Since then Mr. Shepherd's voice has been stilled.
